Posted By Glyn Atkinson My usual message - look at each task separately - trade by trade, job by job, include location and surroundings etc - assess if there is a risk for each one and recommend accordingly. And make sure that the assessment is done at the locations, not from behind a desk, so you do not get the "What does he / she know, never been here to find out?" scenario. Now off to see if anyone wants a keen risk assessment on female beach volleyball on a hot summer's day - well, I can dream, anyway !! Yes, I know, watch where the sand goes !!

Posted By RA The construction projects (medium to large scale) that I manage has a total ban on shorts basically because construction is an ever changing environment and if an operative has to move from one area to another for whatever reason the risk changes. Regarding the vests- we do not ban these but there are certain guidelines to follow- area where it is being worn, task, nearby tasks........... and of course they must apply sun cream. I have encountered a few objections, but when I sat down with the rebels and highlighted what I was trying to do 99.9% understood and complied- better on a one to one though because if you get a mob of rebels together you will have a tough job on your hands trying to get your message across. In the agricultural environments I manage, again the enviornment and task dictates if they can wear shorts/vests and this is explained to all employees during induction. Hope this Helps. RA

Posted By Ali Bearing in mind the number of different hazards on a typical building site and the extent of control one normally has, I'd say NO to shorts, but yes to short sleeved shirts / polo shirts with Hi Vis vest . They would need to follow HSE guidance on working outdoors in Sun too. We too had this discussion in our company. Ali

Posted By Merv Newman I would be inclined to balance the risk of a "first aid" level injury against the possiblity of heat stress. I say first aid because if it's going to be anything more serious then shorts or jeans or a donkey jacket will make little difference. Same thing for vests. Then again, what about splinters ? Discuss. Merv
