Posted By David O'Hara Accident/incident is an unplanned event which results in an injury, damage to plant(for example) or product loss. A near miss is an unplanned event that did not result in injury, illness, damage or product loss- but had the potential to do so. Near misses are warnings of accidents in the making.

Posted By Bill Elliott From HSG 65 - Successful H&S Management - Accident - includes any undesired circumstacnes which give rise to ill health or injury; damage to property, plant, products or the environment; production losses or increased liabilities. Incident - includes all undesired circumstances and "near misses" which could cause accidents. Near misses are those incidents that could give rise to (as above) but did not.
