Posted By Martin Taylor We recently insatlled a machine which requires a platform of some 300 mm to allow for a safe loading position. The platform is approx 1m square and against my advice has been fitted with a lead in ramp ( i advised a step and handrail ) Although the slope of the ramp is not excessive I feel that there is a chnace of stumble when descending - a point aggravated by the absence of a handrail. What do the team think is the best solution for access to a platform? Martin

Posted By Charlie Gunter Martin, It is difficult to comment specifically without seeing the platform but the general principles are covered by the Work at Height Regs. Reg 6(3) states: 'Where work is carried out at height, every employer shall take suitable and sufficient measures to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, any person falling a distance liable to cause personal injury." and Reg 7(2): "An employer shall select work equipment for work at height which— (a) has characteristics including dimensions which— (i) are appropriate to the nature of the work to be performed and the foreseeable loadings; and (ii) allow passage without risk" If a risk assessment shows that a handrail would reduce the risk and if it is reasonably practicable to fit one, then one should be fitted. Care would need to be taken to ensure that the rail did not introduce other hazards. Regards Charlie

Posted By Martin Taylor to help describe the platform it is approx 1m x 1m stadning space raised approx 300mm off the floor. The ramp leads upto the platform at an appropriate angle. My concern is less falling off the platform - although this can not be discounted - it is stumbling when people descend the ramp - I'm thinking that people may expect a step down and stumble occasionally. Just looking for other peoples experiences and preferences for a low level step up like this. Martin

Posted By Charlie Gunter Just a few questions. Is the start of the ramp marked with hazard warning tape? Could the ramp be easilly removed? Given the small size of tha platform, would there be a danger of someone stepping back and falling off if there were no ramp? Charlie
