Hi All
I work in a manufacturing company where the wearing of hearing protection is compulsary for all operators working in the production area. However due to the design of the building a number of people have to walk through production to get to the canteen, reception etc. Should they wear ear defenders while "passing through" or is it enough for them not to? The noise levels in this area are on average 87/88dB. The problem arises when they are "passing through" and stop to have a chat with someone. If anyone else experiences this problem and can recommend a solution please let me know. Cheers

Although the risk to people passing through noisy areas may be low, if the areas are indicated by signs showing that wearing hearing protection is compulsory, then they must wear hearing protection even if only passing through.

Disagree if the peak is 87 etc then loitering in there would not cause damage, however it does set a bad example and shopuld be discouraged
