Posted By jp Hi all, I have just discovered that a power company is storing what looks like 20 propane and butane gas cylinders just a few feet from my house. Although they are in a locked cage, the cage has no roof and the sides could easily be climbed over. Also, their yard has been broken into on several occasions by children. They have previously been driving a fork lift truck around, tipping over large reels of cable, and this weekend I heard them discussing how to get at the cylinders - all rather concerning for many reasons. Does anyone know the legalities of storing cylinders next to houses? Any help very, greatly, extremely appreciated!

Posted By jom JP, I suggest you go straight to your local council. You shouldn't have to find the answer by examining the regs yourself. Get the answers from an authority. They are there to protect you. J.

Posted By jp Again, thanks for all your assistance. Would be grateful if you could please confirm where the info re: a 1.5m gap between cylinder and fence comes from. Are they in regs or guidance? Many thanks

Posted By Kevin Drew Sorry, but I have to disagreee with JAI. The British Compressed Gas Association guidance note 2, Guidance for the storage of gas cylinders in the workplace, suggests slightly different separation distances dependent of the quantities of LPG involved. Minimum separation between the store and the site boundary should be 1 metre for 400 kg. However, for vunerable groups including residential accomodation it recommends a separation distance of 8 metres. Kevin Drew

Posted By Saracen11 Hi jp, have you raised this issue with your LA? Although from what you say, it may be the HSE? You should also report this situation to the Fire Service? Good luck! Regards

Posted By George Wedgwood You will find some useful facts about gas cylinders in the HSE document dealing with waste cylinders but there are details of storage and segregation. Have a look. Regards, George http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/web12.pdf

Posted By jp Many thanks to all who have contributed. I had a chat with the site manager last night and expressed my concerns. Apparently the cylinders were sited there before the houses were built, and never moved. However, he has said that they are aware of the problems, particularly with the children entering the premises, and have just ordered additional CCTV to cover the area and are repairing the damaged fence. Also, he has said that they have plenty of space in the compound and that they can easily relocate the cylinder cage away from the houses, which he has said he will arrange. Now, whether or not I've just been fobbed off remains to be seen, but hopefully they will take the action that they have promised. If not, I'll take your advice and follow this up perhaps in a more formal manner. Thanks again to all for your valued help.
