Has anyone on the forum had any issues of people wearing safety glasses (non-prescription)whilst working on VDUs. We have people complaining that they can't see the screen properly and are unwilling to wear safety glasses (company policy to wear safety glasses on the shopfloor). Maybe they need their eyes testing (as per DSE Regs)or, they are just looking for an excuse not to wear them?
Many thanks
Ron Atkin.

The best approach to this would be to consult with the employees in questions.
Assess the situation, select a range of appropriate remedies and use employee consultation with the selection of the appropriate new PPE.
Makes them feel appreciated and motivates them, and with them actually participating in the selection of the appropriate PPE they are much more likely to wear it and when they dont, they dont have a reason not to be.

Some of our woodworking machinists have a slight tint on the lens to prevent light refraction and distortion. Others have indeed taken the VDU test and received free eye protection to their own prescription free of charge.
Use the HSE's DSE read through assessment sheets with each employee and rate them for need of further tests etc.

No Kate, the glasses aren't scratched, plus they have a wide variety to choose from. We also have glasses cleaning stations around the facility. I think it's just the mentality of some people.

What is the risk when using the VDU's? I take it they are part of a control panel of a larger dangerous machine and I can see the rationale behind a blanket policy on wearing safety specs if there is a risk of injury. Could the risk at the VDU be low enough to remove the need for the specs, or if not, could you reduce the risk at the VDU sufficiently to negate the need for the specs e.g. fitting curtains round the VDU?
