Dear All,

I am trying to help our facilities maintenance people formulate a consistent approach to whether pedestrian doors around offices and plant should have vision panels.

Obviously an approach based on risk is needed, i.e. high volumes thoroughfares, general offices, storage areas will all have different requirements.

However to help prioritise actions and steer in the appropriate direction, does anyone know of a relevant standard, document (BSEN /CIBSE etc) that may help?

BS476 is the standard for fire testing, try that. Chuck in some georgian wired glass and bobs your uncle.

It depends on the location as to whether it is on a fire escape route or not, if you get the local chippy / glazier in and start putting GW glass in, it may compromise the door rating and it would probably be cheaper to buy new anyway!

That said VP's are always a good idea, stopping getting a door banged in your face, stop spilling the coffee and see when the boss is coming!

a: There should be a suitable glazed panel wherever the opening action of the door could be a hazard (Part M building regs).
b: Vision panels in doors should run at least from 500mm to 1500mm high.
