Posted By Is Kismet Can anybody advise if they know of any legal difficulties in employing a 16 year old (over msla)for washing cars using a jet wash? Yes, we will be doing a risk assessment!

Posted By Ron Young Not sure about legal issues but in my experience give a 16 year old a cleaning job and you;ll spend more time, effort and money to get it done properly after they've finished...

Posted By Glyn Atkinson Will the 16 year old also be using the degreasing substance normally used to lift grime and salt deposits prior to jet washing - if so, has a COSHH assessment been done, and what training for use of the jet wash equipment is in place? I have never seen any form of eye protection in this type of washing facility either, it's usually welly boots and let fly amongst several young lads with one older hand taking the money and running the place.

Posted By jackdaw A 16 year old is classed as a young person and not a child, therefore in the situation you describe I can't see there are any legal difficulties in employing someone that age.

Posted By Nicholas Morris Looking ahead Age Discrimination law will make it more difficult to justify not using 16 year olds solely on the basis of their age. We are currently looking at our Young Persons Policy which bars under 18s from operating almost any machinery. Come October we won't be able to do this. No magic answers just yet, com petency assessments have been suggested.

Posted By Neil Budworth For information, there are a couple of websites that might be of use to you. The first one is www.wiseup2work.co.uk which is aimed at 14-19 year olds. There are loads of resources on there to help young people understand the hazards and risks of working life. There is also some information for employers. This forms part of the IOSH wise up2work campaign - you should be seeing a lot more about this over the next few months.
