Hi was wondering if anyone knowledgable about transport safety could give me a some advice.
We do mobile analysis testing on site, one of the reagents used is acetone (highly flammable). is there a threshold volume that we are allowed to carry without tremcards, hazard plates etc? I cant find anything but maybe there is something buried in a CGDRR ACOP somewhere.
Ps we would like to avoid running out of acetone by using 1 litre winchesters kept in a firesafe cabinet inside the van with a fire extinguisher etc but would we have to carry plates and have tremcard etc if we upped from little glass vials to the one litre?
any help appreciated. cheers, nick

Hi NickW,
I believe that acetone is a Class 3 flammable liquid, Transport category 2, and Packing Group II.
If you look this up in the guidance available on the HSE website, the threshold limit is 333 litres.
Therefore you will not have to display orange plates, or carry trem cards, or have dangerous goods qualified drivers, etc.

Always refer to MSDS and supplier for guidance. The Carriage Regs do not always cover everything in sufficient detail to ensure safety.
I assume you do not have a DGSA to disucss the issue with?
Feel free to drop me a line on the email...
