Can anyone point me in the direction of any examples of prosecutions, articles on best practise or examples where employees have dropped like flies from sharing cotton hand towels in toilet facilities?
I visited a company yesterday, nipped to the loo before leaving. The hand drying equipment consisted of a cotton hand towel that didn’t look as though it had been changed for weeks, sopping wet, stained.. (must stop typing now I’m beginning to retch).

Sorry, I can't answer your question, but just wanted to share my disgust! This is one of my pet hates when I visit care homes. I encourage them to use of paper hand towels where possible. I find it hard to imagine how oblivious some people are to those millions of micro-organisms hopping about - just because they can't see them.

I agree, it's horrible when you just have a minging towel to dry your hands on. It's as bad as those pople who go to the toilet, come straight out of the cubicle and leave without washing their hands. Makes me think twice about using door handles and things. Yuch!
I'm afraid I don't have an answer. Try ringing you local HSE and asking to speak to one of the occ health nurses in the specailst group.

Try contacting the Environmental Health Section of your Local Authority.

Yuk. Robert, just a thought - the Infection Control Nurse at your local hospital might have useful information on this.

Hot air hand driers blast micro organisms around the room
Cotton towels pass them on from one person to the next
Not washing hands does the same
Paper towels are the best option
