Posted By Eric PD Does anyone know what legal requiremnt there is for a electrical mains switch gear/distribution board housing ? Is it just good practice that one is installed on premises or is it a legal requirement and if so what regs apply etc and what should the construction consist of, should it be lockable or constructed of fire resistant material... indeed what is the exact purpose of such a box apart from to prevent direct access to the electrics?? I am talking about the mains supply into a premises, the area which usually has the main distribution board, isolation switches, meters etc Sometimes these are contained behind doors sometimes not.... that is my query. Thanks

Posted By DYNAMO Mr PD sir I enjoy your work to date at reducing risk. I am not an electrical engineer and don't know, might be in the Electricity at work regs. Having worked in premises that were 5 years old and other premises that were 105 years old you can have a great variety of electrical distribution on a site from domestic 240V to 11KV so I would imagine different conditions apply. Modern low to medium voltage( say up to 450V) units tend to be finger safe even when you open the doors to them, a rank of circuit breakers that touching will not cause harm and no holes large enough for the British Standard finger to get through to the bare conductors (mind's eye just saw a grizzly with a hat saying "tickets please"). Some learned chum will no doubt put you on the straight and narrow regards exact specs, but maybe you need to give a bit more detail for someone to respond. Kind regards Jeff
