Posted By BS I'm looking for some advise
What legislation requires fire safety inspections to be carried out?
Do fire extinguishers come under PUWER if not what?
Thanks in advance

Posted By Steve Lamb Can you be more specific about 'Fire Safety Inspections'? Do you mean by FRS officers or routine inspections to ensure the means of escape are clear?

Do extinguishers come under PUWER or is there specific regulations for them?

Posted By Kate Graham Fire extinguishers are not provided for use as part of the work activity so personally I wouldn't have thought so (but stand to be corrected). What aspect of the extinguishers are you thinking of - maintenance?

Posted By Kate Graham The maintenance requirement for extinguishers is covered in the fire law (at least it is in the England/Wales one, I'm not familiar with the Scotland one but imagine it will be similar).

Posted By Steve Lamb Spot on, Kate.
It is a specific requirement of the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations to provide adequate firefighting equipment. It is therefore not equipment that is provided for 'normal' work and falls outside PUWER.
The same applies for the Fire Safety Order - I was under the impression that, for normal risks, it would be possible to assess firefighting equipment out of the general fire strategy but this seems to have fallen of deaf ears i.e. in public areas, evacuation should be the priority rather than adding to the problems by having a person close to the fire with escape routes open (also allowing smoke to escape!). Shutting the door will generally restrict the fire until the FRS gets there........oh, sorry, Mr Prescott decided that you can't rely on the FRS turning up any more!
