Our company has just had a visit from the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health . The auditors are saying that we must wear safety helmets in our warehouse as this is law in Saudi. Over the years we have had numerous visits from the HSE and the wearing of safety helmets has not been an issue. I have conducted many risk assessments on the warehouse and found that the risk of objects falling from height is practically nil as pallets are wrapped and shrouded before being stored at height. Comments please . Regards Paul

Have you asked the auditor (nicely!) to show you the piece of legislation to which they are referring?

I think you are implying that you are owned by a Saudi based company. In this case the golden rule applies - I have the gold therefore I set the rules:-). If an employer sets a higher standard than local legislation he is entitled to do so from a purely H&S perspective, the HSE or anybody else has no powers to overrule.
If you ask about good HR practice then things change..............
If however you are not owned by them and they are monitoring/vetting their suppliers then it is up to your managers to decide if they want to go along with the auditor

It may be that in the Saudi warehouses the standard of palletisation/wrapping etc is lower hence the risk of falling objects higher! With no hierarchy of controls in place they simply mitigate by PPE! Perhaps a tactful reference to your RA's based around prevention rather than protection may work if this is the case! Cheers Ian M.

The HSE would however see the use of safety helmets even where the risk is vey low or near insignificant as higher than none at all. The use of braces as well as belts is more secure, so some people say:-)
In the end it really does depend on the political power of the auditor in the situation.

Oh dear! We had an over the top manager who had order pickers wearing hard hats. It took six months and a depot manager with sense to abolish this rule. 1. pickers hats kept falling off 2. it made the taller and kept hitting head on racking 2 No accidents reported on hitting heads before this 3. palletised cases above were shrink wrapped and if a pallet did fall a hat would not help. 4. In the summer pikers complained of head aches due to heat etc. If you are forced into this may i recommend bump caps baseball hat style, you still get hot but a lot more practicable.

You have probably thought of these, just in case:
Do you have vehicles in the warehouse?
Who loads - unloads the shleving?
Is there any machinery / equipment used?
Do you wear head protection outside the building?
Have you ever had any head injuries?
Have any other premises owned by the company had people who sufered head injuries?
Just a thought.
