Posted By geoffb The Landlord of the building where I work tests the fire bells weekly, on a Saturday, when building is unoccupied. On questioning my manager, the Tennant of said building on whether it is a requirement for staff who work in the building to hear sounders he stated no it is only a requirement that they are tested. Is this correct, I'm of the opinion that staff should hear alarms to familiarise themselves with it. also I thought it was the tennant not the landlord who was resposible for the weekly bell test

Posted By shaun mckeever Assuming the system is tested in accordance with BS5839 then it must be tested at a time when all persons can hear it. If other staff work outide normal working hours then arrangements must be made for them to hear the bell test too. The purpose of the bell test is to ensure that it can be heard throughout the building and so that staff are familiar with th sound of the alarm. There is no good reason in an occupied building for the alarm not to be tested in accordance with BS5839.

Posted By TBC The alarm must be tested and heard in all areas with all present and machinery (if any) in normal operation. Otherwise some may not be able to hear the alarm or what it sounds like. It would normally be tested at a set time each week. One company I used to work for tested every Friday at 10am - I watched as employees used to jump out their skin at the sound of it going off. I soon got this changed so that a tannoy announcement would always go out prior to the test.

Posted By Ashley Wood A fire alarm is a life safety system. There is no point in it being tested when there is no life in the building!
