Posted By shaun cooper A good friend of mine works as a telecommunications engineer and covers the whole of the UK. Recently the company he works for have won contracts for the Main Contractor Group on contracts that are practically at hand-over stage. One of the MCG companies are insisting that he has a CITB/CSCS card to work on their sites. He has contacted CITB and they state that they do not have any specific course for telecommunications engineers - does anyone know of such a course and where he can make enquiries?

Posted By Michael Battman Hi Shaun, The thing about CSCS cards is they are achieved through NVQs, consequently your friend needs to register for the NVQ. NVQs involve assessment in the work place, not courses or training - unless there are gaps in his knowledge. There are certainly cards available for Communication workers, details here... http://www.cscs.uk.com/o...at=occupations_available Where to locate assessors? Is there a body that covers their type of work. like CORGI for gas installers? If so they should be able to recommend companies to do the assessment. If not the CITB (or Construction Skills I think is there new name)at Bircham Newton is a good place to start. I hope this helps

Posted By Alan Woodage Shaun, Your friend should only need to get a site visitors card which I believe it is now called a construction affiliated occupations card or some such nonsense. Basically do the H&S test and that is it. If your freind is qualified in his occupation why does he need to re-prove his competence. Reading today that the trsade body for Steeple jacks and lightning protection engineers are about to remove themselves from CSCS stating poor management and lack of quality in qualifications etc.

Posted By shaun cooper I have been on the CSCS website and downloaded the Craft and Operative Level list, however there is no listing for affiliate occupations, where can I find it?

Posted By Ian Mitchell Welcome to the merry-go-round! CSCS and similar schemes are very rigid in what they accept and do not accept. If it isn't on the 'pet list' it does not count and of story! Ludicrously, a CFIOSH individual would still have to sit the touch screen test if he/she wants the visitor's card! As far as I am aware, bar the NVQ/SVQ route no other qualification in the world is good enough. Apologies for being so negative but this issue swallowed up months of my time earlier this year!

Posted By Ciaran McAleenan Shaun If as you state the client [MCG] has employed the company your friend works for they can only have done that on the basis that the company (and those it engages) are competent to do the work specified in the contract. Therefore at this stage they should not have an issue about the competence of your friend or any of his colleagues. Ciaran
