Posted By Darren J Fraser Hi John Nothing specific in respect of a policy, but look at the principal requirements of the Working Time Regulations 1998 - not in any order but: Restrict the normal hours of work of night workers to an average of 8 hours in any 24 hour period, and impose an absolute limit of 8 hours where the work involves special hazards or heavy physical and / or mental strain. State that night workers should be entitled to a free health assessment, which may be provided through the National Health system, prior to their assignment and at regular intervals thereafter. That night workers, suffering from ill-health recognised as being connected with the fact that they perform such work are; whenever possible, transferred to day work to which they are suited. State that night and shift workers must be provided with safety and health protection arrangements that are equivalent to those applying to other workers, and that are avaliable at all times. With regards to risk, you would need to consider in addition to the risks identified for those not working nights, such things as, number of persons on site is less, therefore increased chance of lone working weather conditions particularly in the winter reduced levels of supervision. Questions I would also ask as part of the risk assessment process would include, Is there sufficent 1st aid / fire warden cover ? In the event of an emergency, have thay got current contact details for a member of the management team? Are they able to summon assistance in addition to the manager? How long will it take for people to arrive on site ? Is there a manager on call ? If so does the company operate a no alcohol whilst on call policy ? How is this monitored / policed ? How is training conducted ? (do they have to come off shift to attend training sessions - with the associated problems of reduced sleep, body clock upset, digestive system unbalanced) I would also look at visting the night shift on a regular basis (once a fortnight maybe for a few months - different days) to ensure that all policies, procedures etc are being followed, and then on a random basis as and when. I sure others can add to this, but I hope it is of some assistance. Regards Darren
