Does anyone have any ideas for checking loan workers to make sure they have not hurt themselves....For instance we have guys who can be working on there own for up to 12hours and not see a soul and how would we know that they have hurt themselves in the first 10mins leaving them 11hrs 50mins maybe unconscious. Are there any pieces of equipment out there to help and is this legal to let someone work even though they have radio communication on them to let them do this own without knowing if they are ok because even though they have radios they cannot very well communicated if unconscious or seriously injured..

There are automatic systems which will trigger off an alarm if an employee does not phone in after a certain period of time, which might be of use to you. If you contact me direct I can give you the name of a supplier we use, and a quick google/yahoo search under ‘lone worker alarm systems’ will throw up a number of different companies who provide this sort of service.

It all comes down to risk assessment. What are they doing and what hazards are they exposed to, are there suitable and sufficient controls?
I used to work remote from any colleagues for 2-3 days without contact, in a low risk activity. However,if in an activity with high risk, I'd expect closer supervision and contact.

Glynn, to add to the good advice offered by B, You can usually get a lone worker device which triggers if they have not moved for a few minutes. Usually there is a pre-alarm beep which usually serves to wake them up (if just dozing) If they do not react to that then a radio signal goes out to the control center.

Perhaps a simple communication system could be introduced - depending on the work being carried out, the employee contacts their supervisor every 1/2 hour, every 1 hour, every 4 hours etc.
If no contact is made, the supervisor tries to contact the employee and then, if no contact is made, phone the BILL, they will find out what's going on.
Forgot to mention, it does help a lot if you can establish the itinery / route / timescales of the employee in case you do need to contact emergency services.

Try AOK Safety Ltd
Tel: 01933-278099
They do a device that monitors movement, with a pre-alarm. They can be linked to GPS etc

I hadn't heard about the GPS link but it is SO logical.
Thanks
I did once have a very serious think about the phone-in schedule idea but dropped it. It's too passive and prone to errors. I much prefer the active "something is wrong" system. And with built-in GPS ? Yeah ! Except that probably wouldn't work inside a building. Even so ...
