Posted By D Whitelegg I'm currently working on reviewing an evacuation procedure for a large office block. The procedure states there should be a "Grab Bag" to take when the building is evacuated and provides a list of things it should contain. eg loudhaler, torch, whistles hi viz tabbard. I've been asked to specifically look at this and decide what else should be in there but as I'm more used to large industrial sites I've not had to think about this before. Does anyone out there have any information on what they would expect to find in a grab bag.
Thanks David

Posted By Jason911 You should have a list of employees or an employee rota to be able to do a roll call. Also a contact number list.
If not and the fire brigade ask you if anyones trapped inside, you will not have a clue.

Posted By Steven We also have the above plus a simple map of services and shut off points, where ACM’s are and chemical stores so that the fire brigade will have a better idea of layout and possible danger areas.

Posted By Philip Roberts We don't have a grab bag but most of the things mentioned in previous posts such as building plans, drainage plans, torch, keys for gas and electrical shut off(which are on the outside of the building), list of contacts, etc are kept in a locked cabinet, with a break glass key, by the assembly point. The only thing the duty fire warden has to remember is the visitors book and a print out of people swiped in on the automatic attendance log.

Posted By D Whitelegg Thanks for the information. We have some of the issues raised covered in other ways but it has been really useful to hear what others do. Any other suggestions still welcome.

Posted By B Smart You could also include thick fire resistant gloves and a smoke hood.

Posted By Phil Hi all, if you are going to use o2 in your grab bags, you will need tohave trained staff to use it, as it is classed as aprescription only medicine.

Posted By Tabs What are the gloves and smoke hood for?
In my mind, a grab pack in a large office block is for dealing with casualties, and I would leave the drawings, keys, etc., for the engineering manager to make available. But if it is your responsibility then add them and make sure they are constantly up to date.
There are hundreds of things that could go in, but you need to imagine the scenario, the likely number of people involved, the things you want to achieve and the things that you can't get from around you at your assembly point.
Leave out the tedious (tweezers, sticky plasters, thermometers) and go for the critical (large dressings, triangulars, foil blankets, rubber gloves, rescusitation aids, eye pads, etc).
Remember, a grab pack is normally for major events and to help you cope untill the ambulance gets there ... small cuts are not going to be your priority.
If you only have 20 employees, a roll-call might be a good idea ... but for a building of 3,000 it simply isn't practical - leave it to others.
Contact lists are a good idea, as is marker pens, hazard tape.
Whistle and loudhailer? one or other ... loudhailer requires two sets of spare batteries (they will let you down if you let them).

Posted By Andrew Beveridge We also have a bag full of disposable plastic ponchos, as our staff work in food prep and could end up outside without any protection from the elements.
We have a head torch in the bag, as well as a hand torch, so that there is a hands free option if needed.
Hope this helps. Good luck Regards Andy

Posted By B Smart For Tabs, I understood the question was regarding the evacuation procedure for a large office block. One of the most common reasons for evacuating a large office block is fire, hence the possible need for thick fire resistant gloves and a smoke hood
Hope this helps
