I would like to develop guidance for social care managers on how to manage risks facing their staff, in particular social workers. As part of this I want to provide managers with a generic risk assessment which they can use as a template. Has anyone developed a generic assessment or something similar for social care staff - particularly social workers?

My wife currently works as a care manager and carries out assessments herself. this includes the risks associated with indiviual clients, as in the harm they may cause themsleves and others, and also the risk assocaited with my wife carrying out visits to the client, not forgetting family members who may be present and who they may also have to deal with.
The big one with care managers is stress (lots of people probably think violence)
Have you asked your care manageres what they currently do?

Hi Paul,
As I go round meeting with various managers, I am finding out what measures they have in place like staff phoning to say when they are about to visit a home, use of file information and so on. I would be particularly grateful for any information on what measures other professionals working in the social care field have found particularly useful. Any ideas?

Hi S Joyce
If you e-mail me I will send you the generic assessment that has been developed for Social Workers within our Children & Families teams.
