Posted By Terry Wallington If I rent a first floor office and employ a wheelchair bound person am I responsible for the safe evacuation of that person in an emergency and, if necessary, am I responsible for the purchasing of any equipment necessary to safely evacuate this person? I ask this question to clarify some advice I have given to a company who manages 2 purpose built Business Centres. We have advised a tenant that they should look at their emergency procedures in the event of say a fire. We even gave them some information on relevant equipment they may consider appropriate. Unfortunately they have accused us of descriminating against their disabled employee because the Business Centre will not provide any relevant evacuation equipment for this or any disabled person. I believe that it is the employers responsibility to 1. complete a fire risk assessment and 2. instigate remedial actions for any identified risk areas. I believe that this would include providing any evacuation equipment. Am I wrong? If anyone could point me in the direction of any guidance etc. this would be appreciated. Regards Terry Wallington
