Can anyone direct me to regulations governing raising and lowering of safety curtain in the presence of audiences in a small theatre? We are a small amateur group with an 82 seat theatre which is regularly full. Our safety curtain is legal and safe but it takes a long time to raise and lower and can completely destroy the mood of a play by being so slow.
I have been told that in such a small theatre while it is necessary to raise and lower for every performance (as a safety check)this does not have to be done actually while the audience is there, because the numbers are so small. We could just use curtains instead during the show.
Does anyone else know of these rules and where I can find them?
Thank you.

We use a council town hall with stage for our group, we don't have a 'safety' curtain but we do use the standard curtains (move from tabs out acros the stage) and these have been treated with flame check.
As another source try http://www.blue-room.org.uk/ they are a forum that deal with all manner of stage/theatre and concert related items. They also have a H&S forum.

There is a company that I carry work out for called J&C Joel based in Sowerby Bridge West Yorks who are the experts on the subject. They will definately be able to help. Steve Figg would be a good person to talk to.
