Our MD has employed a 16 year old construction site labourer. Apart from the usual assessment of risk what else should we be doing?

Nothing from the legal side just a few suggestions.
Confiscate the i-pod, eyes and mind on task.
Put him with a squad you would trust your own kids with. Peer pressure will be massive so you don't want to set him with a bunch of comanchees.
Induct him with that squad's foreman so we all know we're singing from the same hymn sheet. Tell him he is not to do any task he isn't trained in or that scares him or gives him the willies no matter who tells him he must do it.
Try and see him at the end of the day and at least once again in the first week to get feedback that he is OK.
Kind regards
Jeff

The LSC (Learning and Skills Council) have published a significant amount of information and guidance aimed at promoting the health and safety of young persons (albeit aimed primarily at organisations that they fund). Many of the principles eg the vital importance of good supervision/mentoring are the same, however. They also do a ‘Be Safe’ booklet for young persons starting work. You may want to take a look at the library of free downloads at their 'SafeLearner' website.

Hope this helps. Regards RJ

Hi Sharron,
You'll find some useful exercises at Wiseup2work (www.wiseup2work.co.uk) that you can use as part of an induction. In the HeadsUp game (which you'll find on the main computer in the office) there is a section on construction sites. There are also trainer notes for HeadsUp in the resources section that give additional information you may want to go through with your trainee.
If you use Wiseup2work and can give me any feedback (from you or your new recruit) please get in touch.
