HELP!

I'm obtaining quotes for the above but am not sure what value in £s I should go for with the Professional Indemnity Insurance as I'm new to this. Can anyone please advise?

I'm just starting out on my own and will be offering H&S Consultancy in low risk environments i.e. not gas/oil etc.

Feel free to e mail me direct on my own e mail address.

Many thanks

Jane

Hi Jane - I think you should take a hard look at why you want professional indemnity insurance. What are you expecting it to protect you from? Certainly, some potential clients will ask the extent of your cover, and you may loose out if you don't have it. However, in 25 years of consulting, I have never found a need for it. Presumably, like us, you will write a report on a problem, and make a number of recommendations. The client can't sue you for negligence unless he executes all your recommendations - and we know that few do. Also, not having PI keeps you on your toes. If you do have it, it may exclude working for American organisations unless you pay extra. Also of course, once you have a PI policy, you become a target. Somebody will see the potential for a £1,000,000 reward if they hound you to death.

I'm not saying you're wrong to take out PI cover. Just don't do it thinking that it is essential for every consultant.

I wish you well in your venture. If you need occupational hygiene support, you know where to come!

Kind regards,

David.

I cannt believe that a professional consultant would not only work without PI but would advise others that this was ok!

Many thanks for all the responses I have received here and via my personal e mail. I've taken advice re: amount of PI etc. required and acted accordingly.

Cheers!
