Posted By Mitch If original design data is no longer available how do you prepare a Techinical file for machinery brought into the EU? I am looking at self certification of machinery but where do I start?

Posted By George Wedgwood This is a specialised (and fairly expensive) process and some experience will be necessary to jump the hoops. http://www.CEmarking.net/ will help you here. My experience in doing this with some US mobile plant was a six month investigation including many conversations with the US supplier, who had never heard of CE marking and never sold into Europe. In the end we were going to require so many manufacturer's drawings and technical details, we bought in the UK instead! I was quoted between £5 and 6 k for type approval - i.e. for a specific model of plant. Remember there are other hoops to jump through such as UK customs! It is generally best to buy US (or other non EU) goods through a EU supplier but wide experience in that usually shows that the CE marking is really worthless anyway as many of the products are not safe in use and have to be modified to comply with PUWER! Just ask the HSE about this and you will simply get a 'whew' we have not got the resources to deal with it! I would try buying in anyway and doing your own PUWER assessment as that will be the test if something goes wrong. As far as I know, UK Customs will not ask for CE marking proof. If you want a PUWER checklist just email me. George

Posted By Stuart Scott Mitch See thread below http://www.iosh.co.uk/in...iew&forum=1&thread=21298 it may help a little. I'm still under the impression that retrospective CE marking of second hand equipment is not something you have to do and PUWER is more relevant in these sorts of cases.
