Posted By AJM I was just wondering what other systems were used in other industries with regard to having employee health surveillance questionnaires filled out. Is it law for instance to have them done privately by the company doctor for patient confidentiality reasons and data protection? Also what if you don't have a company doctor what then because surely your own HR department are not suitable or sufficient to filter through them? Finally should they be in sealed envelopes? and can they be distributed and collected by line managers including if they are not in sealed envelopes. Just interested in other peoples methods, thanks in advance. Alan

Posted By Ron Hunter Big topic! Suggest you need to select an occ. health/occ.hygienist perhaps via BOHS.org or various POOSH partner organisations. Issues of confidentiality, worker involvement, TU agreement etc can all no doubt be resolved, but what about the next step - i.e. how are you going to manage any outcomes?

Posted By Charlie Gunter It depends on the type and reasons for the Health Surveillance. Some Health Surveillance merely requires periodic questionnaires about symptoms and/or a 'responsible person' looking for a clear reaction, for example, skin damage on hands. The responsible person may be a supervisor who has been suitably trained. For other situations a qualified occupational health practioner (nurse or doctor as appropriate) may be required. These service may be provided in-house or bought in. The Data Protection Act will apply where personal data is involved. But that is another (but not complex) matter.
