I am looking for advice please on the safe distances for carrying out construction work beneath overhead power lines. I have already got some information including such things as disconnecting the power, consulting with the line owner etc but am looking for specific distances. It is not possible to move either the proposed construction or the power lines.

Figures that I have found so far include:

No closer than 15m from overhead lines suspended from steel towers or 9m from overhead lines supported on wooden poles.

And:

•275 or 400 kV Minimum clearance 7m
•132 kV Minimum clearance 6.7m
•33kV,11kV and low voltage 5.2m

Can anybody add anything to this?
Many thanks,

Malcolm.

Usually the electric company responsible for the line will tell you how far away you need to be from the particular line in question so in a 'specific' stiuation I would refer back to them. If you're looking for 'general guidance' the HSE has quite a good section on all aspects of electrical safety at work including overhead lines.

Malcolm,

Consult GS6 this gives general guidance.

As earlier the power company will come out and meet on site, you need to have information on what machines you will use make model and dimensions etc.

they will advise on height of goal posts etc.

Many thanks for all the replies. I did get on to both the National Grid and EDF Energy for advice on this. Would you believe that they would not give advice on the telephone but wanted between 20 days and 6 weeks notice!I did try to explain that I wanted general advice on the guidance for safe distances but they were still not forthcoming.

The vertical figures I work to are:-

Up to 11kV
8'6"
2.6 m

>33kV-66kV
9'10"
3.0m

>66kV-132kV
12'2"
3.7m

275 kV
15'0"
4.6m

400 kV
18'0"
5.5m

The clearances quoted in the table are taken from Engineering Recommendation D,1975 (Electricity Council) for voltages up to and including 132kV and other guidance,

Paul
