Detection of hidden gas pipes & electrical services in walls SSOW

Posted By Chris Harris In the course of our work in domestic properties, we strip internal walls of plaster & rendering to inject or instal damp proofing membraines or materials. Even after visual surveys there have been instances of employees encountering both gas & electrical services hidden under the surface and we need to produce & train in a safe system of work. Can anyone recommend a make, type or supplier of detectors they have perhaps found suitable so we could purchase as the first step for our procedure? as I have been advised "DIY" type detectors are not that reliable or accurate? All, any suggestions very much appreciated.

Posted By RP The conventional cable avoidance tool used for locating underground services (will not locate non-ferrous materials) is not suitable for use within a building as it will give inaccuarate/confusing readings. Small hand held pipe, stud and cable locators are the ones to use. Screwfix has some,, the more expensive the better and more robust they are. Better ones are those dedicated to either cable or pipes. This of course means that you would need 2. For a professional cable locator expect to pay around £200 - £300. Or, opt for a cheaper one at around £40 - £100 but will still do the job. http://www.instrotech.co...ble_Fault_Detectors.htmlAlso try: www.tooled-up.com
