Posted By Mark Drury I have been asked to look into the possibilities of making the company i work at a total no smoking site. As a food factory we already have smoking in designated areas only.
I am a Non Smoker, but personnally would prefer to allow a smoking area on site because i believe it will drive people into hiding away to smoke.
I would be greatful of any experiences for or against a non smoking policy.
Regards

Posted By Ron Young Mark,
It might save you a bit of time and money if you thought about the smoking ban in public places planned for England and Wales next year

As you'll note from some of the other threads, banning smoking on site is very likely to result in people puffing away in dark corners. This presents its own set of problems.
A smoking shelter far enough away from the building entrance and air intakes, windows etc so as not to annoy the non-smokers but close enough so it will be used is, I think, the most sensible. Be careful that your shelter will meet the requirments of the new legislation though. You might also want to consider hiding smokers for the view of visitors.
As far as public opinion goes your damned if you do and damned if you don't so good luck. Pick what works best for your company.

Posted By Merv Newman Following all the recent threads on smoking (I would as I smoke a pipe) I'm coming to the opinion that smokers should NOT be given any special consideration over non-smokers. I feel that morning/afternoon/lunch breaks which are available to all employees should be the only occasions for smoking. This may occur (for the time being) in reserved/ventilated/whatever smoking areas, in the car park or off-site. Depending on company policy.
The additional "just-two-minutes-because-I-need-a-fag" breaks are discriminatory against non-smokers and should not be allowed.
The employer might consider anti-smoking counselling and even subsidised patches.
