Posted By Sue Powell I have had an enquiry regarding an employee who has informed his employer that he is suspected of epilepsy and has been advised not to drive by the DVLA.
The employer is clearly wishing to get it right, from the start, in assisting his employee to stay in work and stay safe. So along with my own advice/information, particularly in relation to risk assessment and of course DDA, I had hoped that EMAS would be able to offer guidance/support direct to the employer.
The WEB02 leaflet says that a source of advice on adjustments is EMAS, but when I contacted EMAS they said there was basically nothing they could do and that the HSE website was the best place to get information?!
Whilst I know that EMAS's role may be restricted I was surprised with the unhelpful response.
Anyone else had this experience? HSE5(Rev1) explains that EMAS provides advice at the workplace to employers, employees and trade unions. Am I missing something here?

I recently completed a RA on an employee who suffers from epilepsy and it is controlled through medication, they do not drive a car. The guidance was agreed in private with the person. Essentially I ensured that they could not walk on any building/construction sites on their own, and any working at height was forbidden unless accompanied by the Site Manager in person. There were some other minor controls also.

Posted By Chris Pope I would just like to defend EMAS. I had a working at height query regarding Epilepsy that was under control by medication. Haf Edwards at Plymouth was very helpful.
