Posted By Geoff B McDonnell Now before anyone shouts "Oh God not again!", I realise that this has been asked before! But I am in a new role and have been tasked with developing an in-house training package. If anyone has any crib notes, ideas, packages, etc, in fact anything that may help me on my way I would be most grateful.
I'm in a housing assoc. and I've got day centres, elderly person homes, sheltered schemes, HMOs, offices, you name we've got it. So if any of you kind people out there can pass on some pointers please do!
Many, many, many thanks.
Geoff

Posted By Salus Hi Geoff, i would advise a course for fire marshals run by your nearest emergency services (local fire brigade). Have one (FM) for each building, get yourself a copy of the new regulatory reform (fire safety) order, read it and take it from there.
You will need a fire risk assessment for each of your properties and anyone carrying out the RA will need to (that word with all meaning)be competent, again your emergency services may be helpfull here.
Always undertake training by an acreditted course provider, depending on what game you are in, e.g. want to become a safety person, take a nebosh accredited course.
Do not undertake training by others "jumping on the band wagon"
Hope this helps

Posted By Bob Thompson CMIOSH Hi Geoff I too am looking into fire warden training, I have spoken to our local fire liasion officer who states thast they run an approved certificated course. They see the minimum content to be Prevention of fire, basic legislation, the role of a fire warden, your own procedures, sweeping scenario in your premmises based on your procedures, safe methods of sweepimg eg touching the doors with the back of your hand etc incorporating how to get yourself out of trouble if needed. Use of fire extinguishers by putting out controlled fire. I am Safety adviser to the biggest provider of in house social care in the country so I guess will have similar scenarios to yourself. Our fire service provide this training for £600 per day up to 25 participants. Presumbably your local brigade will have somthing simmilar.
Regards Bob

what is wrong with non-fire brigade trainers? Most tend to be ex brigade and are as good if not better than brigade trainers but are a helluva lot cheaper.

Posted By Salus Shaun, did you not read my response to the thread.
I did not say anything was wrong with private companies providing training.
I advised that, 1. an accredited course was in my opinion the way to go. 2. there are companies out there who are not competent to provide the training and are there just to make a quick "buck" and to keep well clear of them and it's true there are.
Your contribution to this thread so far, has not helped Geoff in anyway to his query?

Posted By shaun mckeever Salus, I'm sorry you felt the need to respond in the fashion you did.
I understood that the questioner wanted to undertake the training himself.
There are very few accredited fire marshal training courses that I am aware of but I have been on other accredited courses which have not been worth the money and in fact have been a waste of time. I felt your answer may have implied that unless you are from a fire brigade or accredited course provider then you are probably a cowboy. This just isnt true.

Posted By Geoff B McDonnell Hi chaps and chappesses me again,
Thanks for all the replies to my request for advice, they have been gratefully received and most helpful.
I have now developed a lovely little training programme that I am most proud of.
I have to admit though that I am a little distressed that my request has lead to some acrimony between a couple of you, but I can't really control that can I!
I wanted to develop the course myself as I have had some bitter experience with both accredited courses and none (but momstly because I wanted to control its direction). Also I have found that some ex-fire officers who have become trainers are a little to infelxible in their approach. But then again, some of them have been great.
As I said before many thanks for all the help and long may these forums continue.
Geoff
