First Aiders at Work - Urgent Reply Requested

Posted By Dee Pearce Hi, I work in the Oil & Gas Industry. Could someone advise me whether our First Aiders are required to cover core hours only? Lots of people work late into the night and start early in the morning plus also work weekends.
Cheers Dee

First aid personnel assigned offshore have the same requirements as any other industry. They would be expected to render first aid during their shift and then, as required, during any site emergency response (even offshift).
Offshore oil and gas workers (except those assigned to very small normally unmanned installations) are accompanied by a competent medic who leads the delivery of medical services on the installation.
Hope this helps/Paul

Posted By Dee Pearce Paul, thanks for your reply. My query is for our onshore personnel. Sorry I didn't make that clear.
Thanks Dee

Posted By Dee Pearce Does the same rule apply to onshore workers. We can't have first aiders stay behind in the evening or come in at weekends because people work overtime. Help!

I have posted above with a link to the relevant HSE document
YES you do need first aid cover if personnel are working..weekends or Nights
you can make use of neighbouring facilities and may not need a full first aider etc depends on what the staff are doing and availability of hospitals etc -you need a RISK ASSESSMENT !!!
It may turn out that a fully stocked first aid kit with information/basic level of undertanding may be sufficient - but as I say depends on your individual circumstances. -but you need something

Posted By Ron Young You must provide first aid cover commensurate with the risk in the place of work. If people are doing the same work out of normal hours that they do during the day and you provide first aid cover then, you would find it hard to reason that no cover was acceptable. In fact with the potential reduction in supervision and tiredness through long working hours, there may be a greater need for first aid cover during this time.

Posted By Kevin Walker Hi,
if you have security personnel on site on a 24 hour basis, get them trained in first aid then it is covered 24 hours a day.
cheers

Thanks Dee
