We have just had a corporate H and S audit carried out and the auditor has made general observations about the machine shop machinery regarding additional guarding to comply with PUWER. the machinery involved includes a lathe - a drilling machine - a surface grinder - a miller.

We have carried out risk assessments and conclude that the original manufacturers guarding is sufficient given that the use of the machine is restricted to trained and skill machine operators.

My question is are there any published standards on the essential guarding of workshop machinery either current buy or that was bought before the machinery directive was implemented.

What sort of guarding is common on lathes for instance - we use the 'traditional' flip over circular guard (not interlocked).

any comments welcome

thanks

Martin

I would ask the auditor for advice and to further expand on their observations, however you have already identified a guard that could be improved with the installation of an interlock device.

Get a copy of HSG 129 -health and safety in engineering workshops it will outline what you need to know

For a manually operated turret lathe -
Fixed guard at rear of machine
Chuck guard
Feed and lead screws guarded or well back from operator
Splashguard for suds and swarf.
