Following a somewhat contraversial initial posting regarding the "Virtual Branch" I have been invited to put some ideas together regarding the structure, content etc of such a beast. One of the issues I have been asked to address is a list of those individuals that would be interested in participation. Can anyone suggest a means of gathering the information I require without creating a "Survey or Campaign"
HELP!!
God forbid I contravene an AUG

How about discussing the technical issues and feasability of a virtual branch with the proviso that those taking part in the discussion would be interested in joining such a branch, obviously those that did not want to join could state this during their response. This discussion would enable you to establish likely numbers and also what issues need to addressed. I for one think that a virtual branch would be worthwhile however you would need to consider how members can access the branch quickplace or something similar. By the way this would not be a campaign or survey as you are discussing/chatting about the technical issues and feasability of the undertaking.

Thanks Pete,
I have responded. For the information of those following the thread IOSH have responded through Neil Budworth, Ruth Doyle and others. Sascha Lemon has contacted me regarding some of the technical issues and providing there is enough support I would hope this will become a reality. In the first instance there is to be a webcast, which I hope those able to do so will support. Sadly I am unable to as I have non negotiable commitments on the day. See SHP for details or contact Sascha direct at IOSH.
The webcast will be based around both the web and a conference call. I hope that the information that I have provided willenable this to be a purely web based system in the future. Avoiding call costs for those in far flung locations. My IT tech knowledge is limited so if there are individuals that either have the knowledge, or are able to tap into company resources to obtain the knowledge, I am sure Sascha would welcome any support. I see any software needing to provide 3 basic functions:
A video link to presenter
A window displaying any visual aids i.e powerpoint slides
A means for immediate feedback to the presenter for questions etc
In an ideal world it would be advantageous for interation between delegates - internet messaging or similar.
regards
Tony

Hi Tony,
Keep up the good work, One suggestion would be to have this subject on the agenda for the next meeting of every branch. Some branches already have websites and it would not be too difficult to host a protected chat room on their websites so that meetings can take place when ever they want.
I like the suggestions made regarding the suggested format for hosting an online meeting, but may I suggest that we crawl before we walk as many people might need to upgrade their computers or software if we get too advanced.
Keep us all informed Tony and if there is anything that I can do, please feel free to contact me, even if it's just for support.

OK, I am strongly with this idea and am prepared to help with tests - getting a web-cam with software and setting up a link, maybe with three or four other volunteers to see how it works.
however, apart from whatever the agenda of a particular meeting is, I'm not yet sure of the practicalities - Fine, we may have a speaker, with a ppt presentation and voice over, but how do we handle questions and answers ? I think the chairperson would have to ask each participant in turn if they have anything to say.
And I would very much like to see at least a photo of each particpant. Even if not live.
Really what it boils down to is that I don't know what I am talking about. Can anyone enlighten me ?
Merv

Merv,
The two way communication issue is handled by a lot of the proprietry software. Alternatves include use of IM messaging/Skype Conference etc which allow multi users to communicate with the group or with other individuals in the group. It would be possible to say publicly that "I enjoyed the presentation" or ask privately "What the hells he/she on about"? Different solutions require different budgets, we will get from this what we are willing to put in.

Tony,
what an excellent iniative and quite exciting (in a sad sort of way!). Please count me in. I'll probably need to add another couple of gadgets to my pc but as long as they don't cost the earth it shouldn't be a problem. Practical questions: 1 - will we still accrue CPD points for our virtual attendance at a branch meeting?
2 - will the virtual branch initally be one branch for all areas, or must we rigidly stick to our own regions?
Thanks, Sheila

I think that just the one "virtual" branch would be ok rather than having regionals but we will have to see how it develops.
We could call it "The Grange Hill" branch. Or should that be just "The Grange"
As an expat I have never been to a branch meeting so can't pick up CPD points that way. (who needs 'em anyway) Maybe the International Specialist group would have some input here. (I think I'm a member, but never hear what they are doing or supposed to be doing)
Does anyone have real experience of this kind of virtual meeting ?
You're getting over excited Merv. Go and have a cup of tea.
See you later

Shiela,
I think it would be sensible to have one virtual branch at this moment in time. If demand is there this could b developed as necessary. As for CPD that would b a matter for IOSH. I would hope so.

Merv,
I agree but why limit it to the International Specialist Branch. Each of the Specialist Branches are likely to geographically spread. This could provide a forum for them to come together.
Think i might join you in that tea break Merv.
