Does anybody know if you can buy barrels for the storage of corrosive substances with pressure relief valves in the screw cap openings.

Some of our barrels are bulging in the warm weather.

Hi,
if theres a pressure relief valve for when it gets warm and the barrels bulge, when they then cool down wont the barrel have a vacuum and therefore try and implode, either way, there may be some deformation?

I would not advise looking for pressure relief barrels, how would you be able to safely relief the corrosive liquid without the risk of contaminating employees handling the drums or passing by the storage areas or FLT driver etc?

You should look at storing them in a cooler place or failing that option, look at the possibility of putting them under a fine net canopy to reduce the radiant heat effect from the sun. It is more likely that it is this type of heat, rather than the UK ambient temperature, that is causing the problem.

I guess, yes. This from Wikipedia:
"Piranha cleaning solution, also known as piranha etch, is a warm mixture of sulphuric acid (H2SO4) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), used to clean organic residue off of substrates. Because the mixture is a strong oxidizer, it will remove most organic matter, and it will also hydroxylate most surfaces (add OH groups), making them extremely hydrophilic (water compatible)."

This is the mixture, a waste product, that is contained in 200ltr barrels.
The chemistry is transfered into these barrels and put outside, the caps are administered finger tight when the chemistry has been transferred. The barrels are then put outside and that is where the barrels are bulging. From time to time somebody will release the cap to vent to air, I am concerned because one employee had the spanner he was using to do this blown onto a nearby roof!

I assume that the pressurisation is caused by the continuing generation of oxygen from the hydrogen peroxide in the mixture. Is there something you can add to the used mixture to ensure that all of the peroxide is used up before you put the waste solution into the barrels?

What little information there is on the web suggests the Product must be allowed to cool in the open before being transferred - this to allow reaction (presumably release of oxygen) to stop. Presumably then your process is not allowing this reaction to exhaust itself before product transfer to 200 litre drums.Is this an option?
