Well firstly I don’t want to seem too fawning over this but I have to say that in my considered opinion that this was a job well done, in fact an encouraging start to the day. Can can we have some more?

Polly Billington the interviewer started from a negative stance but John managed to tackle the “safety professionals becoming a standing joke” issue effectively. He literally took it from the point of view of the man stood in the street. Clearly the research had been done and there was a workman like approach to hazard and risk that the listener should be able to relate to.

I particularly liked the bit about the prospect of further over caution that would result if we are unable to overturn the case brought by the EU commission.

Try the listen again service from the BBC. You will need RealPlayer installed and may not (like me) to be able to access it from work try the link below.

Oh I have just noted that the full transcript is on the site @ http://www.iosh.co.uk/in....cfm?go=news.item&id=666 but better in my opinion to listen if you can.

Thank you, Malcolm

.... for highlighting this and for providing the link which I followed up.

Although the interviewer was steeped in cliches, you were quite right that John Lacey did a very good job. Especially by:
a. explaining clearly what a hazard and a risk are
b. drawing attention to how one particular risk on a street had been well and unobtrusively controlled
c. indicating how the European Court of Justice may be the source of idiotic laws
