I have noticed an accident book entry from a couple of months ago (before I started) that shows that an employee had a splash of MEK go into his eye.
Ive investigated and the person had no time off and received first aid of having the eye cleaned and bathed.
Is this incident a reportable one under RIDDOR, I think it is?

Happy Monday to you..

reportable if;
1) loss of sight, either temp or permanent.

presumable the "victim" had some blurred vision, shuts his eyes for a short while etc etc.....however unless sight was lost for a length of time after wahing out with water during First aid treatment, dont think this is applicable.

2) chemical burn.....well again, presumably no lasting damage, possibly a little discomfort but would it be a chemical burn.....again, in this case, I dont think so.

Unless the accident was more serious than you describe, I wouldnt report it. Anyway, time has passed and you would probably get grumbled at for taking so long to get round to telling HSE about it!

Be interested to see other opinions though...

Agree with holmezy, this sounds like a minor incident with no loss of sight or chemical burn. I don't think the temporary blurry feeling counts as loss of sight - it can happen even if you get water in the eye. IMHO not reportable.
