Posted By sagalout Rob, this document should tell you. It is one you have to buy at about £2.95 and I do not have one to hand. So hopefully someone may havee access to a copy and post a reply for you in the meantime. The link is http://publications.teac...ProductId=0+11+270871+4& But if that doesnt work go to teachernet.gov.uk then "online publications" and the document is called "managing school facilities. Guide 2 Swimming Pools" regards Peter

Posted By Ali Is the risk of hypothermia the one being considered ? I don't think there is a min legal temperature - you would need to risk assess using any industry guidance available. Legionella should not be a problem as the water is chlorinated.

Posted By Steve Conway For children of primary school age the temperature should be maintained at 30-31oC, with a minimum of 28oC. Even at 28oC some chldren will get cold very quickly and many will complain of being cold especially if kept standing around. Remember air temerature is also important - I understand it should be maintaned at 1oC above pool temperature. Steve

Posted By Gary L Does the same temp. criteria relate to outdoor swimming pools also? I know from experience that pupils at local schools were taken to these. Gary

Posted By Joe Ridley Hi, It should also be borne in mind that increasing the pool temperature also can create a number of other problems - Microroganisms multiply faster Bathers get hotter increasing sweat and grease in the water, adding more pollution for the filtration system to deal with Air temps rise too making uncomfortable conditions for others in or around the pool area More moisture in the pool atmosphere, even when the relative humidity is controlled at the same level - with a risk of condensation/possible corrosion and deterioration of building fabric, structure and equipment Dissolved gases become less soluble - more bad smells In our facilities swimming lessons are run with primary school chidren and the average temp is around 29C. But then we are providing a public service and have to cater for all tastes (these days everyone wants a hot bath). Cheers Joe

Posted By Red Ones There is no minimum temperature. It should be up to the school to assess the effect of the temperature on the the pupils and review the duration of the lesson and the level of excercise required during the lesson. I would not expect to see a temperature below 26 degrees, and would like to see closer to 28-29 in reality (Bear in mind that due to the cost of running pools it is unusual to find a pool used exclusively for primary schools, the joint use of pools almost always requires a compromise on pool temperatures). I knew those years of pool operating for schools and international competitive use would become useful one day!!
