We are in the process of starting a significant number of apprentices off around our business. This is a big step as we are a newish organisation, but one that we are extremely proud to be doing.

They will be put through a comprehensive induction process but I am keen to go a bit further, sooner rather than later. Although they will also receive a college module on OSH in the coming months, I really want to try and engage them rather than bore them. I was that surly adolescent, apprentice 20-odd years ago!

Has anyone any experience or comments on the best way to deliver this sort of education, that they can share.

All comments gratefully received.

I have found that just concentrating on the apprentices doesn't fully deliver the behaviour you expect. This is because they can quite quickly be influenced by their peers and other people in their work areas. I would look at how you can work with the people who will be supervising them, especially if they are working on the maintenance side!

Working with apprentices in the past I also found that other issues outside of work often had an impact on their performance. Such as relationships and nightlife! I saw one model apprentice quite rapidly decline due to extra curricular activities.

Ian, that model apprenticeship wasn't me was it? Only kidding, but your points are spot on as I remember discovering beer and women in rapid succession and had a major dressing down from the Personnel Director for my timekeeping and general demeanour on more than one occasion!

Jim, No these aren't construction apprentices - manufacturing.

You might also like to take a look at www.wiseup2work.co.uk which IOSH launched earlier this year. There is information on the Wiseup2work site that might be of use to you. You might also be able to make use of some of the exercises on the site during the induction of the apprentices.
