Posted By Steve Sanders It's dependant on the individuals capability, I know many individual who can easily lift 50Kg, and several that would struggle with 25Kg. Hope this helps Steve

Posted By Renny Thomson It depends: How big? Handles? Hot? Wet/Slippery? How High or Low? I was tempted to reply: No, I'm 93Kg and I don't consider myself too heavy, even though SWMBO does! but thought I'd better not seeing as I started the "Moderators" thread :')

Posted By Gary L Not necessarily. What is the grown man doing with the 50kg? pushing/pulling it? lifting it? What are the individual's capabilities? I know some men who wouldn't bat an eye at moving 50Kg whereas others would struggle to even move it. Has he any pre-existing medical conditions? Not a straightforward question or answer. Gary

Posted By Ron Hunter Tsk! Renny beat me too it! I was going to say that I know some teeenagers that are heavier than that! ;-) Serioulsly though, there cannot be a prescriptive answer here. Remember too that Manual Handing includes pushing, pulling etc.and includes consideration of handling aids (trolleys and barrows etc.) Many of us will have single-handedly helped bump start a car - that's 1000kg +!

Posted By Incolumitas I suppose it depends upon how much the man has grown! It is critical to know how the lift is being carried out. In general I would say 50kg is too much for most people, and way too much to be lifting off the ground. However, I still see coalmen carrying 50kg (old 1cwt) sacks, but they transfer the sack from the bed of the waggon to their upper back without any bending or twisting. And 50kg would be peanuts to a weightlifter - but who has to use a very precise technique. If the 50kg is really unavoidable, I think you should get specialist help in conducting the risk assessment
