Does any body have a spec on the above for petrol and deisel carriage- ie safe methods of storage for van and trailer combinations, limits , amounts, etc. All help appreciated.

Check out the Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regs and the ADR. As I recall for UN1203 (Petrol) the maximum that can be carried, without having to be ADR trained / licenced is 333 litres.

BASIC info: There are design standards re vehicles to consider as a vehicle without an adequate barrier [full partition so as fumes cannot get to driver i.e. a metal wall] between the fuel and the driver compartment is very much more restricted

Usually ~10 ltrs in the boot of a car/small van - ~333ltrs re bigger vans - both with adequate purpose built barriers
