Medical Assessments for Lift Truck Drivers & Warehouse Workers

I work for a company where the lift truck drivers/warehouse workers have never attended a pre-work medical assessment and have never completed a pre-employment medical questionnaire.
We are looking at introducing a medical assessment, for lift truck drivers in the first instance, and then extending to the remaining workforce.
Q do you forsee any potential problems with this e.g. employment law, etc?
Q what are you views on not implementing medical assessments and leaving things as they are at present.
Many Thanks all who respond

Hi,
there is an HSE Guidance on this "Safety in Working with LIft Trucks" priced at £6.50. It recommends medical assessments and details exactly the contents of a specific medical exam / assessment.
Employees can hardly object to Guidance issued by HSE. After all the employer is only trying to ensure that they are safe at work.
We introduced medicals a few years ago for all FLT drivers. About 10% failed the eyesight test (even unsuitable for normal driving test standards). All drivers who failed the eye tests bought glasses and were re-tested : all passed.
Regards

Get hold of a copy of HSG6 Safety in working with lift Trucks, although only guidance, i would suggest you follow it or should an incident occour (touch wood) you are able to provide the hse/court a very good reason for not following the guidance.
Appendix 2 makes a specific mention of the medical standards for lift truck operators

Go for it - you will be amazed how many will need specs or you may even help to uncover a medical problem, which could even save a life. All done is strictest confidence of course.
I would guess that many ‘drivers’ both in the warehouse and on the roads these days go around with the ‘macho’ image and do really need to wear specs. They’re the ones who always damage racking, goods, and the trucks and then hide the fact. On the roads, they’re the ones who cut out in front of you or stay behind a slow moving vehicle because they can’t judge the speed of oncoming cars.
