Posted By Cathy Ricketts I have a group of youngsters (16 to 18) going out to do a beach cleaning exercise does anyone have a risk assessment on this already just to save me some time (it is Friday!) I have got quite a few thoughts of my own already but feeling a little jaded and in need of a large red wine at the end of the week

Posted By Jeffrey Watt Cathy Equipment- litter tongs, bags and sharps boxes (student may find a hypodermic, OK you don't want them to handle hypo's but you do want them to inform the leader so you can tong it into a contaminated sharps box) Gloves. Don't handle the dead seals/birds/fish. Don't know where you are in the country or when this is happening but the more unusual thing to think about is weather. We have just had very strong on shore winds in conjunction with high tides. Consider the local topography, are there any piers, outcroppings, causeways where someone could be washed away by freak waves in bad weather. If so avoid keep well in shore(where the litter will be most likely) If you have access to local knowledge i.e. a manged beach that has life guards during the summer, these guys can give advice of rip tides and currents. Your local authority will no doubt have a countryside manager that is in post all year round. Kind regards Jeff

Posted By Jeffrey Watt Mr T You should know that the radiation form across the water kills all the bugs so we don't worry about washing hands ;-) Jeff
