Quick one please - working with live panels - electricity

Can work on live panels be carried out if the electricians doing the work are capable and prepared to do the work.
It is connecting a 63 amp feed in a fuse box in a factory.
I have no experience with electricity but not happy with working with live electricity.
Your thoughts please Steve

If the work can be done without it being live then it should be. It's an absolute duty under reg 14 of EAW Regs 1989.

yes it can....but no it shouldn't.
Agree with last comment,
isolate before work.
Some electrical work ie testing, fault finding etc, has to be done live and should only be done by highly trained and competent people under a permit to work.

I can't see how you could justify the need in this instance.
Need means testing or similar. Keeping your production line running is a convenience not a need.
Any electrician who is willing to tackle this needs treating with suspicion as they would appear to be prepared to work illegally.
As the other response states it is an absolute duty.

Many thanks for your quick responses.
the permit originally had not identified the isolation requirement and i was not happy with that so stopped work.
Power will now be isolated as i wanted.
again thanks for your inputs

Hi Steven
This is an ideal opportunity for a system review, showing everyone involved what could have happened and then finding out where the holes in the systems are that allowed this to progress as far as it did.
Sorry if i'm telling you something you already know.
Cheers
