Posted By Nicholas Morris We are currently employing on a temporary contract a doctor, qualified in Pakistan, recently arrived in UK and waiting for his GMC registration to be approved. So far we have only used him to carry out a programme of audiometric testing, having sent him on the necessary course to use the audiometer and interpret results. He has experience in Pakistan of occupational/ industrial health and we would very much like to utilise him further in this area, although I'm not sure if we'd fall foul of any medical ethics if we utilised him as an "occupational nurse" or similar prior to him obtaining his registration. Can anyone point me in the right direction/ advise on the requirements in this area please?

Posted By Paul Leadbetter Nicholas Surely he must be registered before he can practise? What would happen if his registration was refused after you had used his services? Paul

Posted By Ian Blenkharn I would be pretty certain that the GMC would take a dim view of his employment in this way, no matter how innocuous it may be. If he is not registered to work in the UK you and he are in a very tricky position. He will have no professional indeminity insurance, and your company insurance may be voided as a result of his lack of regisration. It might be unfortunate, since you could quite legitimately train a non-medic to do the work, but the rules are stringent and robust for all the right reasons, even if they occasionally cause anaomalies such as this. I suggest that you check with the GMS ASAP http://www.gmc-uk.org/
