Posted By P. Moore What inoculations would be recommended to offer to employees undertaking work with drains? Where does the company stand if employees refuse inoculations and someone contracts a disease from the work?

Posted By sagalout If your risk deliberations establish that inoculations are required as part of the protection of their H&S, then they cannot refuse and stay employed for that work. You then have an HR matter that needs managing and not an H&S one, the outcome of which will depend on the HR culture in your company. If you allow them to work without protection, it is no different than allowing any other sort of work without the identified risk controls in place. You would clearly be between a rock and a hard place! I cannot comment on the need for inoculations in your work.

Posted By Gary. Whether you are talking about sewers, surface drains or natural watercourses I would suggest you look on the HSE website for guidance on working with sewage. It gives practical advice on protection from dirty water..... "The following measures can further reduce risk of infection and illness: Ensure that employees and line management understand the risks through proper instruction, training and supervision. Provide suitable personal protective equipment, that may include waterproof/abrasion-resistant gloves, footwear, eye and respiratory protection. Face visors are particularly effective against splashes. Equipment selection and a proper system for inspection and maintenance are important. Provide adequate welfare facilities, including clean water, soap, nailbrushes, disposable paper towels, and where heavy contamination is foreseeable, showers. For remote locations portable welfare facilities should be provided. Areas for storage of clean and contaminated equipment should be segregated and separate from eating facilities. Provide adequate first-aid equipment, including clean water or sterile wipes for cleansing wounds, and a supply of sterile, waterproof, adhesive dressings." Interestingly, the guidance does not mention inoculations. I am therefore of the opinion that they are not absolutely necessary for working with dirty water. You cannot insist that your employees have them because it is an invasive procedure, only advise them that provisions are in place if they wish to have them. It's not compulsory within water companies and they have workers exposed day in day out. As an aside, what would you do if you introduced a policy that made it compulsory for everyone to have injections, and everyone on that job refused? Gary

Posted By John Murgatroyd If you're going to inoculate against Hep B, you need to remember that it takes 6 months for the FULL COURSE of INJECTIONS. And sometimes the recipient of same does not gain full immunity, and a further percentage gain only partial immunity. So to be sure, you'll also need to do a blood test to establish the degre of immunity. There is a combination A & B jab, but nothing for Hep C (unlikely to be needed anyway)
