Feeling stupid again this morning.
Having read LOLER again I can't find the requirement for an appointed person. Reg 8 talks about being competent to plan / risk assess the lift.
Are appointed and competent the same thing?
Do you need to do the Appointed Person training advertised by various providers before you can claim competency?
Comments please gang.

There are a few crane experts on here so you've asked at the right place. The appointed person is a title. The person who has been designated as the appointed person does indeed need to be competent. We can all talk about the definition of competent and how it is measured. But, i think the easiest way for you is to send a person an approved course. Look at most crane hire companies for any relevant training and i think it should be the simplest way to deal with this issue
