Posted By Born Optimist I am going to Uganda shortly with a group of medics, engineers and teachers. In the recent past Uganda has suffered from dictatorial rule, civil war, high HIV infection rates and childhood mortality rates that remain far too high. Therefore it might be argued that occupational H&S hasn't been high on the agenda.
However a quick Internet search did reveal organised H&S activity (ILO etc) including The Uganda Department of Occupational Safety and Health and a drive to improve construction safety.
Anyone have any information about any aspect of H&S in Uganda or the region as a whole? Is IOSH involved at any level?
Many thanks.

Posted By Mike Herbert Check with foreign office before you go.
By all accounts the country is currently having some problems with its neighbours and is not a safe place to visit without some serious personal protection.
The areas that border sudan and congo have had some severe violence recently with 38 civilians being killed including women and children. (BBC News this morning)
Take care mike

Posted By Merv Newman My experience in NORTH-WEST africa is that the legal systems and regulations may be in place but :
1. Nobody knows them 2. Nobody respects them 3. Nobody cares.
Who sends a HSE inspector 1000 km from his office to check out a site ? And when they get there thy are either totally ignored or royally entertained.
You have to convince local site management that they, personally, are going to make an absolute fortune if there are no more fatal accidents.
Can be done. But may the god(s) of your choice go with you.
And please continue to wear the bullet proof Y-fronts.

Posted By timwright Born Optimist,
Having worked in Uganda for over 2 years advising Government staff on a project at the end of the nineties and early noughties. I have some depth of knowledge of Uganda. I still have some regular contacts as I have family and old work colleagues out there. If you wish to contact me I might be able to advise you on some of the 'challenges' that you might face. Contact me via email your details and i will call.
Regards
Tim
