HI ,
Received my CPD ticket back today, 3rd completed cycle and I note the rules have change, (still reading through), but it appears the cycles are now every 3 years and CPD points are now 30. The whole thing is now conducted on line. My overriding comment is if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I agree with that one. I personally prefer to use the paper system because you can plant your certificates easier and they can be subject to veiwing by a potential employer with chronological ease. What do others feel? Come on wake up

Agree, I have just sent off my summary sheet, quite easy to do, I have my file with copies of the course certificates I have attended and documents/papers I have written. much more difficult to log all of this on line, I think we will end up with both if you are chosen at random to produce all of your evidence, it will need to be sent by post.... or have I got the wrong end of the stick.....
as above its not broken...
Regards
Steve

All,
I think you are referring to the adminstration of CPD here, not CPD itself. The paper based scheme has developed a 'points win prizes' approach to CPD which the new on-line scheme seeks to redress.
If you look at the concept of the new scheme it is about reflection on activities and what a professional gains from the activity, not merely the fact that you did something. This actually means that the type of activities that contribute to CPD has been increased considerably to include a lot more everyday development activities such as reading and using the information acquired rather than leaning to the more attendance type events. Although these networking type events are still very useful many members just don't find the time to attend and this was one of the issues addressed in the new scheme following the consultation exercise carried out with IOSH members.
I agree the paper based scheme isn't as yet broke but the on-line scheme and its concept is new generation CPD and once you become more familiar with it then you will realise how much more relevant the new scheme is to actual professional development then you may well find that you prefer it. Of course if you like paper and think that certificates prove competence to employers then keep these as well. CPD belongs to the individual so how you use it depends on your own personal requirements.

Hazel,
I am slowly getting to grips with the online system, and agree with you on the paper side of CPD I have kept a CPD file for as long as I can remember and just see the online as a log.
Questions though
I have just completed the IOSH OHSAS18001 (condcuted at the Grange by BSI) Course and found it very useful, as I have recently implemented the system in my company, and will be conducting my first audit shortly once I have written it and trained the team of internal auditors.
Allocating points:
I have a difficluty, previously it was simple this type of course would have been 2 points per day. Now though it seems that I can only allocate 3 points?, I think I have the concept of the CPD right I alloacte points for the course upon reflection once I complete then if I revisit an activity (using this as a vehicle) such as writing audit checklists, training the team condcuting the audit, writing action plans and reviewing then I alloacte as I go post reflection. The course itself though was a good learning curve as I learnt alot about the standard/specification and obviously the audit of 18001 can I allocate additional points and how do you do that.
Also we had a breif last year at our branch on the ouline of the new CPD, would it not make sense for their to be a bit of a road show round the branch meetings from those centrally involved with CPD at IOSH to give a bit of specific presentation on its use. I think I am getting to grips with it but see a lot of members asking questions, if nothing else we would be getting confirmation we are on the right road?
Many thanks Dave

Dave,
The benchmark of 2 points per day for the scheme is still the same. It just means that now you can award more or less points (1-3) if you feel the activity was really good or only gave you a small amount of development. The system only allows you to put 3 points per activity in at the moment but there is no reason you can't reflect on each day of the course individually or reflect on the course as a whole and then put 3 ditto for each of the days. This is a bit cumbersome and we are reviewing this but for initial programme we are leaving it a little prescriptive. In some trials we did at an early stage some people managed to give 12 points for attending a branch meeting! Once you have implemented the scheme and carried out an audit you will be able to reflect again on the usefulness of the activity and award more points if you think fit. The scheme really is about identifying development and one activity can lead to several reflective statements over a period of time.
I am booked to present to 4 branches at the moment and am very happy to do this if invited as the 'mystery' of CPD is easily solved. I am also happy to speak to any other groups of members who would like to discuss the issue. I have done this for a number of organisations recently.

Ali,
A number of members who are still in the MIOSH category are required to complete a 2 year paper-based CPD cycle as part of the transitional arrangments to Chartered Membership. I guess you are still in that situation so yes it is 20 points over 2 years.
