Posted By Sharon See this article: http://www.manchestereve...estive_celebrations.html Basically managers are being put off having Xmas parties in case accidents, harrassment or any other inappropriate or illegal activites. This has been in the news over the weekend.

Posted By Vernon Kay As MD, I have been to Christmas parties within my organisation for over 15 years and there is always the bit of "over the top" stuff, like kissing colleagues and playing dodgy games, but that is part of the festive season. I don't think H&S should stop you smoothing with a secretary under the mistletoe.

Posted By GSP No Article in that link. But upon knowing the duties placed on an employer organising a Christmas party, i too would be very cautious. They go as far as making sure that drunken employees get home safely. I wouldn't like to organise one that's for sure. I know its taken a year of hardwork to organise the full expenses paid Christmas party for the 200+ people in our office this year.

Posted By Christopher Kelly I think Christmas parties are a great thing... except where you have an employer who: totally ignores advice and insists on having a hog-roast in the middle of the fire escape, causing an alarm / fire service call-out; deliberately employs catering contractors who don't use optics resulting in double / quadruple measures - consequently half the staff there don't understand why they are half-cut, despite making a big effort to go easy this year - one falls over in the toilets, trapping their finger in the catch and, falling over with their weight on the door, manages to amputate the end of their finger. Another collapses at home and the partner can't lift them off the radiator - serious burns and head injury. Result - the owner / MD thinks it ridiculous that he should take any responsibility for any improvements (ie using optics next year / having the hog-roast in a more suitable location)waffles about what a favour he is doing for his employees and threatens to cancel next year's do. The guy in the article however is just being miserable - stopping people getting together is ridiculous ! Regards

Posted By Bob Shillabeer Hum Bug I say Hum Bug. The organiser/MD should let people know before hand that any bad behaviour will result in disciplinary action being taken and demand his people act like grown ups; then wish them a Merry Christmas. We have Christmas do's someone sometimes gets a bit tipsy and has to be bundled into a taxi home with a wait till your wife sees you your for it warning attached. Its not just the MD's responsibility you know the employees have a role to play as well.

Posted By Alexander Falconer I see Ebeneezer Scrooge is still alive & kicking these days, and not just a figment of Dickens' imagination?

Posted By holmezy Hi folks just to be safe then, shall we cancel Christmas this year? Just think of all that stress you save yourself trying to find imaginative pressies for everyone? No point in adding any more risk to an already dangerous existance1

Posted By Tabs Compared to what the company organises to make a profit in this world, I would have thought a Christmas party was not beyond the wit of a business head. Our job is just to make sure that the obvious is taken care of and that people are looked after a little more than usual. That isn't beyond us is it? Christmas is alive and well, why not try to enjoy it? My advice to my charges? Eat, drink, and pass the crackers!
