hi Harry,
Maintained emergency lighting (M) – a lighting system
in which all emergency lighting lamps are in operation at all material times.
Non-maintained emergency lighting (NM) – a lighting system in which all emergency lighting lamps are in operation only when the supply to the normal lighting
fails.
With regards to which type to use you would have to assess each area of the club and decide which would be the most suitable.

- and check any licence requirements in this respect - particularly for areas where normal lighting could be inadequate to identify the exit routes to persons unfamiliar with the premises.

Don't forget the third class of emergency lights..... "sustained".
Non Maintained = lit only when supply fails
Maintained = same lamp lit irrespective of supply
Sustained = luminaire contains more than one lamp, different lamps are lit when supply present / supply fails
Sustained luminaires can therefore be used to light a large area brightly in normal use, and also provide escape lighting during mains failure.

Hi Guys. I was a club secretary for about three years and went through this. It is best to use un-maintained because they don't interfere with things light concerts etc but you will need to carry out regular tests and run the battery down at least once a month. Had to do it myself no one slse willing to do it. If you have a medium to large function room you will need to have emergency flood lights to help people see in the event of evacuation at night. My advise would be talk to an IECC approved electrian and get him to advise you.

You need to risk-assess for this. For instance, there are some rooms where activity takes place in very low normal lighting and it is valuable for people to be able to identify the location of the room exits during that time - particularly where they are unfamiliar with the environment.
